چکیده
to identify mental disorders and their prevalence in patients with retinitis pigmentosa (rp).this descriptive study was carried out between january 2009 and january 2010 on 417 patients with rp, who were members of iran rp center. the necessary data were collected using questionnaires consisting two parts: the background characteristics and questions assessing the mental health and screening personality and psychosocial disorders, which were designed based on the minnesota multiphasic personality inventory. data were analyzed using spss software with chi-square test to assess the relationship between background characteristics and each mental disorder. scores in the range of 30 and 70 were considered normal.patients with rp suffered from eight mental disorders with the following prevalence: obsessive compulsive disorder (39.3%), schizophrenia (38.1%), antisocial personality (37.6%), paranoia (36.7%), hypochondrias (35.3%), depression (31.2%), hysteria (26.9%), and hypomania (23.7%). no one had all the eight mental disorders simultaneously. statistical analysis showed no significant relationship between obsessive compulsive disorder, paranoia, depression, and hysteria and background characteristics. a significant association was found between schizophrenia and onset of rp (p = 0.047). furthermore, a significant association was seen between hypochondrias and educational level (p = 0.026) as well as income (p = 0.037), and smoking (p = 0.009). there was also a significant association between hypomania and marital status (p = 0.027).the findings showed that rp might lead to various mental disorders, especially obsessive compulsive disorder.

متن کاملStudy of Patterns of Inheritance in Affected Patients with Retinitis Pigmentosa in Iranian Populations
Background and Aims: Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is the most common form of inherited retinal degeneration, photoreceptors loss of which in the retina causes visual loss. The purpose of the present study was to determine patterns of inheritance in RP patients in Yazd to help the health professional for designing suitable laboratory testing for the high risk families. Materials and Methods: Thirt...
متن کاملRetinitis Pigmentosa and Allied Disorders
Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a generic term for a group of disorders characterized by hereditary diffuse usually bilaterally symmetrical progressive dysfunction, cell loss and eventual atrophy of retina. Initially photoreceptors are involved and subsequently inner retina is damaged. Although both rods and cones are involved, damage to the rods is predominant. RP may be seen in isolation (Typica...
متن کاملSpatial judgments in patients with retinitis pigmentosa
Previous investigations into cortical plasticity in the presence of ocular disease have focused on central retinal damage. Perceptually, patients often report distortions of visual space which can be partially explained by perceptual filling-in. The mechanisms involved could also apply to peripheral field loss. Spatial interval discrimination was tested in 28 retinitis pigmentosa (RP) patients ...
متن کاملSymmetry discrimination in patients with retinitis pigmentosa
To investigate the relative sensory and perceptual contributions to central visual function of patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP), we tested symmetry discrimination using block patterns with varying types of symmetric organization. Eleven control subjects with normal vision and 11 patients with RP with 20/30 visual acuity or better, viewed patterns presented for 255 msec. The patterns diff...
متن کاملDiagnostic imaging in patients with retinitis pigmentosa.
Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a progressive inherited retinal disease, and patients with RP have reduced visual function caused by a degeneration of the photoreceptors and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). At the end stage of RP, the degeneration of the photoreceptors in the fovea reduces central vision, and RP is one of the main causes of acquired blindness in developed countries. Therefore, mo...
